COMPOSTABLE BIO-POLYMERS

A Brief write up for Compostable Bio-Polymer Applications:-

  • Plastic is everywhere these days, and it’s not exactly easy to get rid of since it doesn’t have end of life. Plastic pollution reached an all-time high in recent years, but as plastic is too useful and too ingrained in our lives to be given up.
  • Scientists have been working on a new generation of plastics that can meet the needs of manufacturers and the community, while also providing benefits to the environment. So the new generation of plastic should be sustainable with end-of-life after disposal.
  • Sustainability: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“
  • So this new generation of plastic known as ‘bioplastics/ Bio-compostable Polymers’, not only have the potential to be biodegradable and/or recyclable, but fully sustainable across all areas of their life cycle. Compostable Polymers are organic materials that break down into a natural or organic state when placed into an appropriate environment.
  • Most important Biopolymer, PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) was invented which was derived from Corn/ Maize Starch. They have shown the way to diminish plastic’s negative environmental impact.
  • Compostable Bioplastics have ‘End of Life’ property in it. These are bio-based ‘PLA/ PBAT/ PBS/ PHA’ based compounds. When it goes under the soil, the micro-organism present in the soil attack on it & start converting them into small particles. When particle size becomes < 40 Delton (Unit under microscope), the micro-organism can eat it. They eat it, digest it & convert them into CO2, Water & Biomass. Biomass is a compost which increases fertility of the soil.
  • When you dispose it off in Industrial composting facility, it happens within 3-6 months max. When you landfill it, the degradation period depends on, thickness of film & moisture present in the soil. Lower the thickness, faster would be degradation, Higher the moisture present/ humidity in the soil, faster would be degradation.
  • So compostable Biopolymer based films are most effective environment friendly option to conventional plastic since it has End-of-Life after disposal with equal or better strength.
  • Biopolymer resins used for manufacturing film are certified compostable as per EN 13432 & OK Compost. It can be downgauged up to 18 Mic. thickness & is food grade.
